How Large Does an L007 Vampire Pleco Grow?

Prepare for a Substantial Adult

The L007 Vampire Pleco can reach approximately 10–12 inches (25–30 cm) as an adult.

Its potential size makes long-term aquarium planning particularly important.

A juvenile may look manageable when purchased, but it can eventually require a large aquarium with substantial bottom territory.

• Multiple caves
• Strong filtration
• Excellent oxygenation
• Good water circulation
• Secure décor
• Driftwood
• Rocks
• Open swimming and resting areas

Aquarium Size and Setup

Large Aquarium Recommended

A 100–125 gallon aquarium or larger is a sensible long-term target for an adult L007, with larger systems preferable for exceptionally large specimens or community aquariums.

Recommended Aquarium Features

• Oversized biological filtration
• Powerful mechanical filtration
• Strong water circulation
• High oxygenation
• Large pleco caves
• Aquarium-safe driftwood
• Smooth rocks
• Secure rock formations
• Shaded areas
• Open bottom territory

Because L007 is a powerful fish, decorations should be firmly positioned to prevent accidental movement.

What Does an L007 Vampire Pleco Eat?

Provide a Protein-Rich, Varied Diet

L007 has a stronger carnivorous tendency than many traditional algae-grazing plecos.

A nutritious diet should include quality protein while still providing suitable plant-based foods.

Recommended Foods

• High-quality sinking carnivore pellets
• Sinking pleco pellets
• Shrimp-based foods
• Krill-based foods
• Frozen bloodworms
• Brine shrimp
• Mysis shrimp
• Seafood-based foods
• Quality gel foods
• Spirulina-based foods
• Occasional vegetables

Feeding Tip

Offer food after the aquarium lights have dimmed.

Because L007 is primarily nocturnal, evening feeding can help the fish feed naturally and reduce competition with daytime-active tank mates.

Behaviour and Temperament

A Powerful Nocturnal Pleco

The L007 Vampire Pleco is generally more territorial than many small community plecos.

It may establish a preferred cave or section of the aquarium and defend it against other bottom-dwelling fish.

At night, it can become highly active, exploring the aquarium and searching for food.

You may observe your Vampire Pleco:

• Exploring caves
• Patrolling its territory
• Searching for food
• Moving across rocks
• Investigating driftwood
• Resting beneath décor
• Displaying its impressive mouth and teeth

Adequate territory is important, particularly when keeping multiple plecos.

Compatible Tank Mates

Choose Tank Mates Carefully

L007 can be maintained with appropriately sized fish that share similar warm-water requirements.

Potential companions include:

• Large peaceful tetras
• Silver Dollars
• Compatible South American fish
• Robust peaceful cichlids
• Larger peaceful catfish
• Other appropriately sized tropical fish

Avoid

• Very small fish that could potentially be swallowed
• Highly aggressive predators
• Extremely territorial cichlids
• Excessively competitive bottom dwellers
• Multiple large plecos without sufficient space

When keeping more than one pleco, provide several caves and substantial territory.

L007 Vampire Pleco in a Natural Aquarium

Build a Rocky, Cave-Rich Habitat

A natural-style aquarium can highlight the L007’s dark body and contrasting spots.

Consider adding:

• Large aquarium-safe driftwood
• Smooth river rocks
• Large pleco caves
• Rock crevices
• Shaded shelters
• Leaf litter
• Open bottom territory
• Strong water circulation

The dark coloration of L007 can look particularly impressive against natural rockwork and subdued aquarium lighting.

Breeding L007 Vampire Plecos

A Specialist Breeding Project

Breeding L-number plecos is generally best suited to experienced aquarists with mature fish and large dedicated aquariums.

A potential breeding setup should provide:

• Mature males and females
• Large suitable caves
• Excellent water quality
• Strong oxygenation
• Stable warm temperatures
• Nutritious food
• Strong circulation
• Minimal disturbance

Providing several caves allows fish to establish territories and select suitable spawning locations.
